Is there a web site or info source where I can find out if a photograph is copywritten?

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

There is an image on a clients web site that I did not put there but has now become part of an copywrite issue. The image has been on the web site since 2004 and someone is claiming it is their property and wants to charge the client for it’s use.

According to US national law all creative works are copywritten automatically. Now you can still apply for copyright at the copyright office for works that you definitely wish to protect. The only guaranteed way to know you can use something is consent from the creator or a Creative Commons license stating acceptable uses.

Novgorod the Great!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Novgorod
"Despite its name, Novgorod is among the most ancient cities among the Eastern Slavs. The Sofia First Chronicle first mentions it in 859; the Novgorodian First Chronicle mentions it first under the year 862 when it was allegedly already a major station on the trade route from the Baltics to Byzantium."

What web site has info on a Wiltshire Arms Co. single barrel shotgun patented August 2, 1913?

Sunday, August 16th, 2009

I’d like to know a little history on this wonderful gun that’s been handed down to me. (Can anyone tell me where it was made… how many were made and/or what the value might be….in good condition) A web site with such information would be wonderful.

It’s an H.D. Folsom gun. With the limited info provided that’s about all I can give you. They were produced by Crescent (a div of Folsom) and by a couple of Belgian makers, as well. If yours has the ELG in an oval proof mark under the barrel, it’s a Belgian. It was made somewhere between about 1890 to the mid 1920’s.

The "date" almost always isn’t….and any "serial numbers" you find are most likely in factory lot numbers that can’t be traced. In some cases, the same firearm could have been produced for thirty to fifty years under a *lot* of different date/serial/model numbers. Folsom guns are notorious for having no verifiable pedigree.

If you’ll edit your post a tad and describe all the proofs and all the markings, I might be able to be a bit more accurate.

It’s possibly a damascus barrel…."Belgian Laminated Steel" anywhere on the barrel? If it is, it’s unsafe to shoot with modern ammo.

Folsom guns were the working man’s guns of their time. Very similar to Remington and Mossberg today. They aren’t really collectible outside a small group of us. They don’t go too high. In average condition, you can expect $150 tops on a good day….most likely closer to $75-100 but you never know.

You can do a search here on Yahoo Answers for "Crescent shotgun" or "Folsom" and you’ll get lots of info.
