Sally Kristen Ride was born May 26, 1951 in Las Angeles, California. Her father, Dr. Dale Ride, was a professor of political science. Her mother, Joyce Ride, stayed at home to raise Sally and her sister. Her sister was nicknamed Bear. In 1968, Sally graduated from Westlake Private High School for Girls in Los Angeles, California. Sally attended Stanford University where she received a Bachelor of Science in Physics and a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1973, a Master of Science and Doctorate Degrees in Physics in 1975 and 1978.
